From the capital, Damascus, we must have at least three hours a rocky and dusty villages to land on almost cinematic staging of Palmyra, the great caravan city that was incorporated into the Roman Empire and lived centuries of glory thanks to the transfer of goods and knowledge that flowed through the Silk Road from the depths of Asia to the Mediterranean ports.
